Yellow Cake Donuts + Donut Printable!

IMG_4158

I’m happy to be sharing something new to MBC today, donuts! The kiddos used to ask for Donuts all the time, but it was just something I rarely ever bought. Because of course I rarely ever buy store bought sweets and they are generally deep fried too, making them even more yummy sinful then your average treat. Not to mention the fact that attempting to eat just one is really risky. I’ve been wanting to get one of those cute little donut makers for like ever, so when I saw one marked half off at Target a few months ago I grabbed it up…and we’ve been happily making donuts ever since. :)

They have become a weekend fav around here, the kids love them, and I really love making them. Each time I’ve shared them on Instagram I get lots of comments, so I thought they would be fun to share. Since it’s also teacher appreciation week, I made up a cute little donut tag and sent them with the kiddo to school. The donut graphic came from the awesome Maree Truelove. :)

There are several different versions of these little donut makers on the market. I purchased this one from Sunbean at Target. It makes these perfect little baked donuts with minimal effort. So not only are they a little bit better for you…the mini size means it’s ok to have two! ;) They also make donut pans if you would rather go that route. I have one but I don’t like how they always bake flat on one side. I’d much rather cute little round donuts. But that’s just me!

I also wanted to share with you one more fun little gadget I’ve been using to make donuts. This is Wilton’s new batter tip! Previously I would just pour the batter into a piping bag or a ziplock and try to make as little mess as possible as I’m moving around the bag and batter is dripping out. This tip actually holds in the batter and only releases it with pressure. I really love it. It does take a bit more pressure then I thought it would, so it takes a minute to get use too but over all it’s really helpful. Not only does it make the process mess free, it’s allows me to waste very little batter.

The recipe I used for these yellow donuts is actually a Babycakes cake pop recipe. I loved this when I made it for cake pops, and I thought it would be great for donuts too.

Here’s what you will need:

Yellow Donuts

1 1/2 Cups Of Flour
1 TSP Baking Powder
1/4 TSP Salt
1 Stick Softened Butter
1 Cup Sugar
2 Eggs
2 TSP Vanilla
1/2 Cup Milk
Cooking Spray

Vanilla Frosting Or Glaze

1/4 Cup Melted Butter
1 1/4 Cup Powdered Sugar
1 TSP Vanilla
2-4 TSP Hot Water
Sprinkles To Top

This recipe makes approx. 20 mini donuts.

Step 1: Turn on donut maker to begin heating up.

Step 2: In a medium mixing bowl mix together flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, or the bowl of and electric mixer, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in eggs and vanilla, mix until fully combined.

Step 4: Slowly add in flour and then milk.

IMG_4024-2

Step 5: Fill a pipping bag or ziplock with batter for easy pouring. This is where I use the Wilton batter tip.

Step 6: Lightly spray each donut cavity with cooking spray and then quickly fill each cavity to the top with batter. Shut the donut maker, and let bake for 10 minutes.

IMG_4030-2

These weren’t quit done yet…but they are looking good!

IMG_4032-2

Step 7: Using a fork gently remove the donuts and place on a cooling rack to cool. Complete this step until all of your batter had been used.

IMG_4035-2

If you would like to “ice” just the top of your donuts and add sprinkles like I did you will want to wait to make your icing until the donuts are cool. If you would like to dunk your donuts and glaze them, you can make your icing/glaze while the donuts are baking and dunk them while they are hot.

Step 8: In a small bowl melt butter, mix in vanilla, then powdered sugar.

Step 9: Slowly add in hot water until desired consistency. If you are wanting to glaze your donuts while hot, you will want a runny thin consistency that will run off the donuts. If your icing just the tops like I have done with these, you will want a thick (but smooth) consistency.

IMG_4039-2

Step 10: Get your sprinkles and icing ready beside your donuts. Lay your cooling rack over a piece of wax paper. This will catch the excess icing and sprinkles for easy clean up.

IMG_4042-2

Step 11: To top the donuts simply allow the donut to sink into the icing half way, and then pull up. Allow excess to drip off. (I never actually remove my fingers from the donuts, I had to do so to take a picture here)

IMG_4043-2

Step 12: Sprinkle and let dry!

Other Helpful Tips:

You will want to dip no more then 3-4 donuts before sprinkling, or the glaze will begin to harden and they will not stick.

As you are dipping your donuts, stir the icing every few donuts so the icing doesn’t being to “crust” on the top in the bowl.

Sometimes the top side doesn’t get as “done”. You can leave the donut maker open and flip over the donuts to “brown” the top side. This happens when I don’t fill the cavities completely full..

Not only are these fun to make with the kiddos on the weekends, they are great to share! I made up this tag for Teacher’s appreciation week but they will also work great just about any time you need to say “Thanks” to somebody helpful.

I’ll be sharing the chocolate version soon too, they are our FAVS!

Pst. If your really in a pinch…these little tags will work great with store bought donuts. It’s ok, I’m pretty sure donuts are welcomed in any form! But if you have the chance…making them is really fun!

  1. I do not have a donut maker but would love to try this recipe. Could I use this recipe in the Wilton baked donut pan in a conventional oven? If so, do I fill to the top and how long and what temp should I bake them?

    Thanks!

    • I would think it would work in an oven just fine! I would fill them to the top and then bake them for about 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. :)

  3. I happened to stumble upon this page but I must say those donuts look absolutely beautiful!

  4. Hi, can you let me know where you get the i donut know tag? is it sold in Target as well?
    Thank you in advance!

  5. I have always wondered about making my own donuts but have never tried. I am now seriously thinking about getting a donut maker like yours. Thank you for a great recipe and really good instructions!

  6. These are adorable! I just made them, and they came out perfect. Just wondering what kind of vanilla you use. I always bake with McCormick’s pure vanilla extract, which has a dark color, and makes the frosting dark, not white. Do you use a clear vanilla?

  7. This is adorable! You’ve got skills! I’m a font whore ;) Which fonts did you use on your printable?

  8. Kim Bathrick says:

Can I use a sugar free cake mix out of the box to make these donuts?

  9. Tiffany Kuykendall says:

Thank You for sharing this recipe. I actually put a mini donut maker in my 8 yr old daughters Easter basket last week. We LOVE these donuts. Your recipe is beautiful ,delicious, & easy. All important but especially the easy part -when you have 4 kiddos. I can’t wait to try chocolate ones! The donut maker is working overtime- without mommy having to -Thank You!

    • Wow that’s a fab idea – I bet your kiddo was so excited! I might have to steal that idea in the future…I think they need some whisks, measuring cups, a new mixer…hehehehe ;) Glad you’re enjoying donut making with them!

  10. I love these little mini donuts. My daughters are having a flae market at school and she wanted to sell these. Where did you get the donut make from and how much? Will this recipe work with the babycakes donut maker as well because we have that already.

    Thanks reply soon!

    • Hi! I purchased mine through Target, it’s a SunBeam. I do not see any problem with you using the Babycakes Donut maker as it’s pretty much the same concept. Happy donut making!

  11. How did you print and cut out the tag? Do you use some sort of special cutter and did you print onto card stock?

    • Hello! I print out the tags on card stock and then cut it out with a little paper trimmer that I have, then punch the hole with a regular hole punch.

  12. I found a mini donut maker at a thrift shop for a dollar! So cannot wait to make your recipes! Thank you!

  13. Can’t wait to try this recipe!! I’m using a conventional oven and a donut pan- should I just set the oven to 350?

  14. Thank you so much for sharing the adorable printable! For a volunteer thank you gift, I enlarged it to two per page, printed on card stock, cut it out, wrote a note on the back, and taped a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card below the note. They turned out perfectly! Found you on Pinterest and will be sure to stop back again. :-)
