Ok maybe I’m being just a bit dramatic, but these cupcakes are seriously good. Like, I made them last week and I’m still wishing I could eat another, good. Like, my friends are already wondering when I can make them again, good. The recipe isn’t actually new to me. You may remember I posted about these last year but they had not made it over to the new site just yet. While I was working on my Smart Cookies, I thought it would be a great chance to bring them back. I seriously forgot how irresistible these were…

Last week I whipped some up as a teacher appreciation gift to go along with the Smart Cookie Printable Tags. They are a really great option in place of chocolate chip cookies. That is, if you can overcome the fear of sharing! ;) The cupcake itself is just a slightly altered box of yellow cake mix, and the frosting is much like cookie dough with out the risk of raw egg of course. Just the risk of addiction!

If you would like to make some of these dangerously yummy cupcakes here’s what you’ll need:

Chocolate Chip Cupcakes

1 Box Yellow Cake Mix + Ingredients Listed On Box
1-2 Cups Chocolate Chips
1 Cup Brown Sugar

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Icing

2 Sticks Unsalted Butter
1 1/2 Cups Brown Sugar
1 TBS Vanilla Extract
1 1/2 Cup Powdered Sugar
2 Cups Flour
4-6 TBS Milk
1/2 Cup Chocolate Chips For Topping

SORRY! It was a super late night when I made these so I didn’t take my usual step-by-step pictures. Next time I make these I’ll add some pictures in. I assure you, there WILL be a next time :). Also they do make mini chocolate chips which would work perfect for these, especially in the icing! I didn’t have any so I just stuck to the big ones. However, if you have the minis you could pour them right into your frosting as long as you use a round piping tip!

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, or bowl of an electric mixer, pour in cake mix and brown sugar. Mix until combined.

Step 2: Add in the cake mix ingredients as listed on the box. Mix Well.

Step 3: Gently fold in 1-2 cups chocolate chips. Start with one cup and add in more depending on just how chocolatey you would like them.

Step 4: Bake at 350 for 16-18 minutes. Let Cool.

Now for the cookie dough icing.

Step 5: In a medium mixing bowl mix together flour and powdered sugar, set aside.

Step 6: In a large mixing bowl, or the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together butter and brown sugar.

Step 7: Add in vanilla, mix well. Slowly add in flour/sugar mixture until fully combined.

Step 8: Add in milk 1 TBS at a time until desired consistency.

Step 8: Frost cupcakes and top with chocolate chips. If you need help frosting pretty swirls…check out my post Frosting Cupcakes 101.

Want in on a little secret? Pop one of these in the microwave for about 10 seconds. The icing will get soft and warm, oh my goodness it’s like the best thing over. Is it possible to be in love with a cupcake? Because these just might be it for me…

  1. Sound fabulous.
But one thing I am questioning. Your “For a Little Secret
you said to pop in microwave for 10 minutes — on’t you mean seconds?

  2. Despite your warnings, I still really want to eat these! They look dangerously good!

  3. I’m soooooooo excited to try these!! They sounds AMAZING!!! Thanks so much! Chocolate chip cookies are a family fave and alway hold warm happy memories for me…so the idea of a cupcake…and even better FROSTING, to taste similar…OH YES PLEASE!!! wooooohoooo!!! ;)

  4. Hey, I can’t wait to make these but was wondering about using two cups of flour in the frosting? Does it not taste like flour only or does it have the raw cookie dough taste? Also can you double the frosting recipe ? Thanks!

    • You can always double the frosting recipe! And it tastes very much like raw cookie dough and not just like flour. You can cut back on the flour if you would like, the icing will just be softer and a little less easy to pipe. If you love raw cookie dough you’ll love these!

  5. I made these for my sisters graduation party! Followed the instructions……. but my icing turned out rather gritty. i mixed extremely well and even added a bit more milk. Was yours gritty?

    • The icing is naturally a bit gritty due to the nature of it…as if you were really eating cookie dough. You can always substitute the granulated sugar for more powdered sugar. I wanted to keep the recipe as close to cookie dough as possible.:)

  6. Shake Villela says:

is it safe to put raw flour in the icing mixture?

  7. hey, so i don’t exactly live in a country where yellow cake mix is available so is there any other recipe through which i can make these? they look delicious and i really want to try them. hope to here from you soon

  8. These were super delicious.

  9. Hello! I am just about to try your recipe, but I’m wondering which brown sugar would you suggest…light brown, or dark brown? I came across your site last night, and I love it!!

  10. Lyndsey Coronis says:

I just made these. But all my chocolate chips went to the bottom. So it is like I have a chocolate chip bottom cookie. Any suggestions?

    • I_[heart]_Cupcakes says:

Add a little flour to the chocolate chips before adding them to the batter. This should help them from ending up at the bottom of your cupcake. Hope this helps :)

  11. I_[heart]_Cupcakes says:

Hi Toni! Just recently came across your site and I absolutely love it! In this recipe you say to use a box of yellow cake mix. Is there a favorite brand that you recommend to achieve the best results for a yummy cupcake?

  12. If your chocolate chips fall to the bottom all you have to do is toss them in about a teaspoon of cornstarch so they are fully coated… Works every time! :)

  13. I tried these. They tasted yummy but i had trouble with them rising over the pan and then falling and then sticking to the pan so i couldnt get them out. What did i do wrong? I made sure i followed the recipe and i used duncan heines new yellow cake mix which costs twice as much as their regular box mix. So bummed because they tasted so good but couldnt share with anyone.

    • Hello Liz! To be honest I haven’t tried Duncan Hines new cake mix just yet, but I can’t imagine it would make too big of a difference. Is there a chance you over mixed the cupcake batter? Over mixing is often the culprit of falling cupcakes. They have too much air in them so they rise quickly and nicely then before you know it, they are all sunken and sad.
